Design of the contemporary armchair, shown in a contemporary interior. The armchair is designed for domestic use where it must withstand the stresses and strains of children and pets. It must be stylish, easy to care for and maintain its shape at all times.
Here the armchair is shown form different angles so that you can get a clear idea of the intended design. Cow hide print leather and off white leather are used as upholstery materials. Also the arm rest and back cushion, were buttoned with 40 mm diameter buttons which were covered in off white leather.
Section drawing of the armchair using Autocad. The seat cushion is made from thick high-density polyurethane foam core which is wrapped in cotton padding and duck down.
The polyurethane foam is firm enough to support the back and keep its shape yet, soft enough
to be comfortable. The duck down and cotton padding provides the extra softness required
to make the armchair very comfortable. This construction does not require you to puff up the cushion as polyurethane foam will help to keep the cushion's shape.
The back cushion is also made from thick high density polyurethane foam which is cut at an angle in order to provide a slight recline for lumbar support and comfort.
The arm pads are made from plywood forming (see section drawing above for details) which has thick foam and thick layer of cotton padding glued on to it. This is upholstered in off white leather, buttoned and bolted on to the arm rest to produce a comfortable clean edged arm pads.
Foot of the armchair is made of L shaped polished chrome metal which is screwed to the corner strengthening blocks at the base of the armchair (see detail drawing below).
The frame is constructed from 1inch thick kiln dried beech wood. For added strength the frame and all joints are dowelled and glued with screwed corner strengthening blocks. The spring construction is of eight way hand tied springs (sign of superior quality furniture).
These helical springs are sewn on to webbing at the base of the frame. They are then hand tied to each other and to the armchair frame in a web with eight knots per spring so that they all work in concert to relieve stress on critical points in the frame all while giving comfortable support.
The spring frame is covered with hessian and a thin layer of high density foam is placed on top. This is next covered with high weight cotton lining in off white colour. The seat cushion can now be placed on top of it to give maximum comfort.
